Ellen DeGeneres was taken aback by Caitlyn Jenner’s view on same-sex marriage, which the talk-show host discussed with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show Tuesday.
Jenner was a guest on the season premiere of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that same day, and in a pre-taped interview, the former Olympian called herself a “traditionalist,” who was against same-sex marriage originally, but is now “OK with it.”

“I’m older than most people in the audience, and I kind of like tradition, you know, and it’s always been a man and a woman,” Jenner said. But the 65-year-old followed with the fact that she would not stand in the way of anyone’s happiness.
“If that word ‘marriage’ is really, really that important to you, I can go with it,” Jenner said.
DeGeneres is married to actress Portia De Rossi.
DeGeneres and Stern attempted to wrap their heads around the “confusing” comments.
“She still has a judgment about gay marriage,” DeGeneres said of Jenner. “And I said, ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you … and you still have a judgment about gay people and marriage.’ “

Stern called the idea of Jenner’s outlook “crazy.”
“Here’s a person on TV crying, ‘I want to be myself, I want to be genuine, I don’t want people to ridicule me’ and then says in the same breath, ‘Gee, gay marriage, I don’t get it,’ ” Stern said. “It’s remarkable.”
Despite Jenner’s outlook, DeGeneres said the pair had a great interview and she was grateful Jenner appeared on the show, even if questions remain.
“I don’t really know her, and I’m trying to understand it because I don’t fully understand it either, but I also want everyone to be happy,” DeGeneres said. “But I don’t fully understand all of that, but I want her to be happy, which is what I want for her for me.”
