Another year, another accusation that a major hit was ripped off from another song. Just this week, the writers of a song recorded by an X Factor winner are suing Ed Sheeran for $20 million, alleging his smash single “Photograph” rips off their 2009 composition “Amazing.” Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard, two career songwriters, claim Sheeran’s top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit copies “Amazing” from X Factor winner Matt Cardle “note for note.”
While lawsuits like these are increasingly common, this one does set itself apart from the pack by boasting Richard Busch — the man who successfully won the controversial “Blurred Lines” trial for Marvin Gaye’s estate — as the prosecuting attorney.
‘X Factor’ Winner Distances Himself From Ed Sheeran Lawsuit
While the final verdict will be left to a court of law, that hasn’t stopped Sheerios from blasting it on Twitter. Cardle himself made a point to let the world know that he is not part of this lawsuit and has nothing but respect for the U.K. singer-songwriter.
But what do you think about the rip-off allegations? Take a listen to the songs below for a comparison of the alleged similarities, and let us know your opinion by voting in the poll below.
