Ed Sheeran got personal with Charlamagne Tha God for what will reportedly be the singer-songwriter’s only interview for his No.6 Collaborations Project album cycle. In the interview, Sheeran talked about being yourself, marriage and his latest collaborations with artists including Cardi B and Travis Scott.
“The fact is, I’ve already achieved more than I thought I could. So now I’m at a point where I’m just having fun,” Sheeran said in the 50-minute interview.
Below, find the five best moments from the sit-down.
His Eminem & 50 Cent Collab Was ‘Meant to Be’
Released on Friday (July 12), Sheeran’s collaborations album features the singles “I Don’t Care” with Justin Bieber and “Cross Me” featuring Chance the Rapper and PnB Rock. 50 Cent and Eminem also make appearences on No.6.
After recording his verse on “Remember the Name” Sheeran planned to include Em and 50 on the record, which Sheeran said he “wished into existence.” Before playing a gig with Eminem in London, Sheeran suggested the collaboration in a chance encounter with the pair of hip-hop luminaries. “I walked in to Eminem’s dressing room, and it’s him and 50 Cent in there,” said Sheeran. “I was like, this has to be meant to be!”
Why He Relates to Eminem
While Sheeran and Eminem’s backgrounds are as polar-opposite as it gets, Sheeran touched on his personal connection to the rapper. “I really relate to him, even more so now,” said Sheeran. “As a kid I related to him just because I felt like a bit of an outcast, but even now like the way that we’ve both stuck in our hometowns, we both live here, we both got to a level where you’re so famous you cannot go outside.”
Introducing Mrs. Sheeran
Sheeran also confirmed his marriage to longtime partner, Cherry Seaborn, which was subtly revealed in the “Remember the Name” lyric “Watch how the lyrics in the songs might get twisted/ My wife wears red, but looks better without the lipstick.” “It was actually before me and Cherry got married,” Sheeran clarified, “and I knew that we’d be married by the point that the song came out.” Sheeran added, “‘Cause someone’s gonna hear that and be like, ‘Oh, they’re married!’”
Sheeran’s collaboration with singer-songwriter Yebba, “Best of Me,” is also about his relationship with Seaborn.
“Is it healthy to think that the best of you is another person, though?” Charlamagne asked.
“Maybe not,” replied Sheeran. “It might not be healthy, but I feel like it’s a human flaw. I constantly wake up every day with Cherry and I’m just like, ‘Why the f— are you with me? Like, you could literally be with whoever you wanted, and you’ve chosen me.’”
Ed’s Wife Suggested Justin Bieber Collab
Apparently Seaborn was also the one who suggested Sheeran collaborate with Bieber on “I Don’t Care.” “Bieber just got married. I just got married,” said Sheeran. “That song is about being at [an] industry event with the woman you love, or even the person you love, and kind of being like, ‘Fuck this, let’s just have fun ourselves.'”
He’s Finally Comfortable in His Own Skin
While for a period Sheeran admitted conforming to a stereotypical celebrity image — which included regular outings at Hollywood clubs and rubbing elbows with former Disney stars — he also touched on the importance of staying true to yourself. “I just think being yourself is so powerful,” said Sheeran. “Because of it I have now a confidence in myself; because of being myself, all of these great things have happened.”
