Elton John is a legend, having played over 4,000 concerts in over 80 countries. His record sales are upwards of 300 million, and his songs have a particular way of crossing generational lines and genres. A new documentary — Elton John: The Nation’s Favorite Song, premiering Saturday at 8 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT on REELZ — looks back at how his songs have stood the test of time.
The 90-minute documentary is comprised of home videos and archival footage that details John’s career as he experienced it. The pop star shares stories of his outrageous wardrobes and his relationship with songwriter Bernie Taupin, which has spanned half a century. What’s more, artists like Annie Lennox, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Sting, Chris Martin, Billy Joel, Quincy Jones, Boy George and Dionne Warwick share their own personal experiences of working with Elton.
In this clip from the documentary, watch as fellow British icon Ed Sheeran gushes over the song he calls a “gem”: “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from Disney’s The Lion King. “That’s one thing I’m eternally jealous of Elton,” Sheeran says. “Despite all the other accolades and all the other things, he wrote The Lion King.”
Hear the incredible story of the song’s origins from Elton’s guitarist Davey Johnstone and Elton himself below.
