Modern Family’s Ed O’Neill has a lot of fans, so you can’t blame him if he can’t pick out the famous ones. The actor sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on Monday afternoon to tell the story behind his airport encounter with one of those fans: pop princess Britney Spears.

?While waiting for his flight from LAX to Hawaii, O’Neill said a young woman approached him for a photo. The pop artist was extra sweet, saying, “Oh, I love Modern Family! You’re my favorite on the show!” according to O’Neill. Little did he know, the blond woman was none other than Britney Spears.
“I didn’t know it was her,” said O’Neill.

O’Neill’s manager had to point out to the 70-year-old actor that the woman in the photo was Spears, after the pic rang in thousands of likes on Spears’ Twitter.
“I mean, look at the look on my face. Do I look like I’m sitting with Britney Spears?” O’Neill joked.
