Details have emerged on Steve Earle’s upcoming live album, a companion piece to an Earle documentary being released this fall. As previously reported, filmmaker Amos Poe (“The Blank Generation”) began compiling footage of the artist last October for “Just an American Boy.” No release date has been set for the DVD edition of the film, but Artemis will on Sept. 23 release a two-disc audio companion.
“Just an American Boy — The Audio Documentary,” was filmed primarily at recent Earle concerts in Toronto and Bloomington, Ind., and features 18 live recordings. The album will also include a number of Earle’s on-stage monologues, in which he discusses politics and his reasons for opposing the death penalty, among other topics. Earle’s son Justin also performs a cut on the 94-minute, two-disc set. His “Time You Waste” closes the second disc.
Earle is currently finishing the West Coast leg of a North American tour. His last album, 2002’s “Jerusalem,” entered The Billboard 200 at No. 59 and has sold 93,000 units in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
In other news, Universal will on Aug. 19 release “The Best of Steve Earle” as part of its 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection series. The set sports 14 tracks drawn from Earle’s first three albums for MCA.
