Bob Dylan has completed a new album, “Love and Theft,” due for a Sept. 11 release on Columbia. It’s Dylan’s first album since 1997’s Grammy-winning “Time Out of Mind,” which debuted at No. 10 on The Billboard 200, his highest chart showing since 1979’s “Slow Train Coming.”
The new set finds the legendary singer/songwriter backed by his touring band: guitarist Charlie Sexton, bassist Tony Garnier, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, and drummer David Kemper. Keyboardist Augie Myers, who guested on “Time Out of Mind,” also plays on “Love and Theft.”
“The songs don’t have any genetic history,” Dylan told USA Today. “Is it like ‘Time Out of Mind’ or ‘Oh Mercy’ or ‘Blood on the Tracks’ or whatever? Probably not. I think of it more as a greatest-hits album, volume one or volume two. Without the hits — not yet, anyway.”
The 12-track album includes “Mississippi,” which Sheryl Crow recorded for her 1998 album “The Globe Sessions.” USA Today describes “Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum” as “rockabilly-fueled,” while “Honest with Me” is said to be “hard-rocking.” Dylan stretches his vocal pipes on “Moonlight” and tries out “upbeat Western swing” on “Summer Days.”
Dylan is currently on tour in Europe, but has 13 North American dates confirmed throughout the summer, beginning Aug. 10 in Des Moines, Iowa.
