Reunited English pop icons Duran Duran will receive an honorary accolade at the next Brit Awards, to be held Feb. 17 at Earls Court in London. The quintet is to be credited with the outstanding contribution award, in recognition of a career spanning 25 years and record sales of more than 70 million units. Duran Duran will also perform at the ceremony.
“Whilst this award recognizes past achievements which are much deserved, I am just as excited about the band’s vibrancy today which augurs well for continuing success,” Brits committee chairman Peter Jamieson said in a statement. Previous recipients of the award include Tom Jones, Sting, U2, David Bowie, Eurythmics, the Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Van Morrison and the Who.
The accolade comes as Duran Duran’s comeback gains steam. The original lineup — Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and the three Taylors: Andy, John and Roger — is in the midst of a successful reunion tour, its first in 18 years. An album of new material is also in the works.
