Critically eulogized Welsh singing discovery Duffy made a spectacular debut at No. 1 on the new U.K. singles chart yesterday (Feb. 17) with “Mercy” (A&M/Universal). In a double for Universal labels, Jack Johnson’s “Sleep Through the Static” (Brushfire/Island) started a second week atop the album bestsellers.
“Mercy” is Duffy’s first full single, after the limited new year release of “Rockferry,” and follows massive media excitement around the 23-year-old, born Aimee Duffy. She begins a U.K. tour tomorrow and releases her debut album, also titled “Rockferry” and produced by Bernard Butler, on March 3.
Her debut prevented Nickelback’s “Rockstar” (Roadrunner), which led the way in midweek sales, from ascending to No. 1. It held at No.2 as Basshunter’s chart-topper of the last five weeks, “Now You’re Gone” (Hard2Beat), fell to No. 3. North London-born singer-songwriter David Jordan’s “Sun Goes Down” (Mercury) rose 5-4, as his “Set The Mood” album climbed 28-13.
There was a No. 7 debut for “What’s It Gonna Be” (Ministry of Sound) by H “Two” O featuring Platnum, following its heavy exposure on various video channels. The Feeling’s “I Thought It Was Over” (Universal Island) climbed 12-9 and Goldfrapp’s “A&E” (Mute) rose 18-10 to become the duo’s third U.K. top 10 hit.
Johnson’s album stayed at No. 1 ahead of the luckless Nickelback, who are now also runner-up on that survey with “All the Right Reasons,” climbing from No. 3. Michael Jackson’s TV-advertised anniversary release “Thriller 25” (Epic) came in at No. 3 yesterday, with Morrissey’s “Greatest Hits” (Decca) at No. 5.
Michael Buble’s special edition of the “Call Me Irresponsible” album (Reprise) rose again 13-6, and there was a No. 10 debut for One Night Only’s “Started a Fire” (Vertigo), following the Yorkshire band’s top 10 success with the single “Just for Tonight.”
OneRepublic, who scored a new No. 11 U.K. hit of their own with “Stop and Stare” (Polydor), continued their epic run atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, as the Timbaland track on which they appear, “Apologize,” scored a 13th week at No. 1. Johnson’s album debuted at No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums.
