When a band is named after its frontperson, you’re going to have some high hopes for that special someone. Meet Dorothy, named after its lightning rod frontwoman’s first name — not last — so rest assured this isn’t ’80s pop-metal.
The Los Angeles quartet is the sort of band that’s dying to make rock cool again. Then you get a load of their easygoing cool and you’re reminded that there have always been kids like them keeping rock edgy, albeit under the radar, far from mainstream attention.
But Dorothy hasn’t even dropped a full length yet, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In the meantime, they’re keeping it real with a string of singles leading up to their forthcoming self-titled EP. Billboard is excited to premiere the latest — a stomping fuzz-rocker called “The Wicked Ones.”
“This night ain’t for the faint of heart, ‘cause the faint of heart gon’ fall apart,” sings Dorothy, setting us up for some real, imminent danger to our delicate lives — or maybe just an evening of bad decisions long after the band’s half-hour set is through. Either way, its bluesy, chugging heartbeat (think Black Sabbath, White Stripes, or a myriad others in between) gets the point across.
Dorothy — which also features Mark Jackson on guitar, Greg Cash on bass, and Zac Morris on drums — is about to kick off a residency at L.A.’s Bootleg Theater every Monday night in November. Those outside the Los Angeles area can still get excited for the new self-titled EP “Wicked Ones” represents, which is coming soon.
