Following the release of 2018’s Juno-winning album Both Ways, folk singer-songwriter Donovan Woods decided to strip his sound down even further with a new album. Well, new-ish. Entitled The Other Way, Woods’ latest recasts the songs from his breakthrough LP in a solely acoustic context.
In the case of a song like “I Ain’t Ever Loved No One,” which was already a hushed affair on Both Ways, Woods emphasizes the delicate clarity of the acoustic guitar fingering. Further adding a different dimension to the song is a fresh voice — Tenille Townes, a rising singer-songwriter who recently appeared on Billboard’s Emerging Artists thanks to her breakthrough song “Somebody’s Daughter.”
“I’m a big fan of ‘Somebody’s Daughter,’ I think it just sounds so good on the radio,” Woods says. “So when we were doing the acoustic version of the record, I really hoped that Tenille would be into the idea. Her voice just rings so sweetly to me. Sounds tough and vulnerable, the best things. Our version of the song has a real ache, I think, and her voice tells a very distinct version of her side of the story.”
