President Trump is known for his unique manner of speaking, and, more famous, perhaps, for his unique Twitter shorthand. But on Tuesday night (May 30), the tweeter-in-chief set the service on fire with one of his most confounding, bizarre messages. Late at night Trump launched his latest attack on the press, but appeared to lose his train of thought midway through the midnight ramble.
“[d]espite the constant negative press,” he wrote. And then he added “covfefe.” It’s that last word, which, technically, is not a word at all, that got people fired up and launched the mother of all Trump memes. The president didn’t clarify or correct the apparent fat-finger typo, even as the phantom word ballooned into a worldwide trending topic.
By early morning on Wednesday (May 31), Trump appeared to have noticed his mistake and he deleted the original tweet, replacing it with, “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’??? Enjoy!”
But it was too late:
