President Donald Trump’s latest speech on immigration and border control has infuriated Cher, Bette Midler and more.
Trump addressed the nation last night (Jan. 7) from the Oval Office and requested $5.7 billion to build a wall along the border. Celebrities have since taken to social media to criticize his speech’s inaccuracies about why migrants are seeking asylum in the U.S., and claiming that Americans of color would have to compete with undocumented immigrants for jobs.
“All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages. Among those hardest-hit are African Americans and Hispanic Americans,” Trump said.
Trump also shifted the blame for the partial shutdown of the federal government onto Congress; the nearly three-week crisis has affected around 800,000 federal workers.
Check out some of the responses below.

#munchausensbyproxy We’re living it every day. It might be called something else; a person holds an entire nation hostage so that they will pay attention to him. What is that called?? Anyone??

As Trump spouts off with his BS…a reminder of when he had this conversation about the wall with the then President of Mexico. We know what was said thanks to leaked transcripts published in the Washington Post. https://t.co/6heXOac0YU pic.twitter.com/GmzGh8qvgv

No state of emergency declared. No new policy. Just a bunch of lies about process and racist scare stories.
Good job, networks.

FACT: Immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans.

Trump was grooming hard tonight. Hitler-Ian rhetoric. Wake up. Fight back or sit down Democrats

Donald:
Only of these two things is actually getting built, brick by brick:
1) your damned border wall, or
2) Mueller’s case against you.Guess which it is? ——

Trump, live now, railing against immigrants while sitting beside the photo of his immigrant mother. Shame. pic.twitter.com/Oly64Zy2bF

Straight lies from the Oval are nothing new. What is new is that @realdonaldtrump is losing base support, and fast, as his failures pile up. @speakerpelosi and @senschumer spoke truth to faux power as they pulled at the threads of an unraveling administration.

This entire Trump speech has the cadence of a Wheel Of Fortune contestant solving the puzzle.

Building a border wall won’t make us any safer. You know what will? Ending this ridiculous #TrumpShutdown and making sure vital agencies like the US Coast Guard, TSA, and federal law enforcement have the funds they need to maintain our national security.
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) January 9, 2019
The House passed legislation to reopen the government. Senate Republican leadership must bring this legislation to a vote—until that happens, @SenateDems should continue to block consideration of all unrelated bills. Americans deserve better. We must end this #TrumpShutdown now.
— Sen. Cory Booker (@SenBooker) January 9, 2019
President @realdonaldtrump continues to mislead to justify his damaging shutdown. There’s a smarter way for us to invest $5 billion than an impractical wall. The Gateway Project will create jobs, promote economic and national security, and build critically needed infrastructure.

How ironic that a president who is AWOL is going to tell us tonight why we need A WALL. #TrumpAddress

I thought Trump said Mexico was going to pay for the wall/fence? https://t.co/XPNYdck8Hn
