Donald Glover — aka Childish Gambino — has been hard at work while living in London this year, filming the latest Star Wars film, crafting new tunes and developing the next season of his hit series Atlanta.
The multi-hyphenate hit-maker caught up with BBC Radio 1’s Clara Amfo on Tuesday (Aug. 8) to discuss his new Brit life, revealing what’s next for the star.
On the subject of the much anticipated second season of Atlanta, he said its shaping up but he’s taking his time.
“I’m not the type of person to rush anything,” he said. “I feel like if you rush it, you’ll start to get something you don’t want and then you start to question why you even liked it. So, I’m not gonna make anything until it’s ready. But to be completely honest, it’s almost ready. I’m pretty happy with a lot of the things and I think it’s better than the first season. It’s almost there, just gotta wait a little longer.”
He also said he’s working on new music and has been drawing inspiration from his new surroundings.
“I’ve been working on [new music] here,” he said. “You guys have been very instrumental in my music. So I’m very happy about that. London has been very inspirational.”
As for whether the new tunes will feature any U.K. acts, it’s unclear. While he said he has been listening to a lot of British music and has met a lot of the country’s artists, he said he has yet to ask anyone to work together just yet.
On the subject of Glover’s runaway hit “Redbone” under his Childish Gambino moniker, he said the success has come as a great surprise and quoted John Mayer‘s reaction.
“I didn’t expect it to be a like kind of zeitgeist song, it seemed like it just kind of crawled in there,” he said. I think John Mayer called it a ‘sniper’ because it kind of just quietly got in there. But it’s cool that people connected to it, I feel like that’s exactly what you want to do as an artist is make a song where it connects with people’s lives.”
