Ged Doherty has been promoted to chairman and CEO of Sony BMG Music Entertainment U.K. and Ireland. He will succeed Rob Stringer, who will assume a New York-based role this September as president of Sony Music Label Group U.S.
The appointment was confirmed in an internal memo from Sony BMG COO Tim Bowen, distributed earlier today. The news is expected to be officially announced in the coming days.
Doherty was previously president, music division at Sony BMG Music Entertainment U.K. In his new role, he will report to Bowen.
Doherty has had a distinguished and lengthy career at both BMG and Sony Music prior to the 2004 joint-venture which gave rise to the creation of Sony BMG.
He joined Sony Music in 1992 as head of international marketing in New York. In 1996, he returned to Britain in the role as managing director, Columbia. He joined BMG in 1999 as Arista managing director. In April 2001, he was elevated to president, music division, at BMG; a title he carried over to Sony BMG. Prior to joining Sony Music, Doherty served as manager to British 80s hitmaking singers Paul Young and Alison Moyet.
Since his appointment as music division president in April 2001, Doherty has played a central role in the successes of such artists as Dido, Will Young, Natasha Bedingfield, Kasabian, Editors and newcomer Sandi Thom.
Sony BMG Entertainment U.K.’s frontline music units were reorganized in January 2006 into the distinct Columbia Label Group and the RCA Label Groups, for which Doherty had responsibility.
