I was 20 when I moved to India.. I bought an Enfield bike from a friend in Delhi that spent one day teaching me how to ride and then used the money I gave him for a one way ticket back to Florida. The last advice he gave me was don’t hit a cow and only ride on the highway between 2-6 am.. so u don’t die from smog and heat… and that’s what I did.. from Calcutta to Delhi to Rishikesh.. I was sleeping on the bike when I couldn’t find a roadside tea station to keep me awake at night occasionally checking the bike onto a train when I could afford it.. I swam in the Ganges which the CdC wouldn’t approve of.. did yoga with 80 years olds that were more flexibal than me.. bought vinyl records from backwater shops crashed into a camel fell in love a few times and always wrote to my mom from the internet cafes that they had in the villages I stopped in .. I ended up in Gujarat at the end working on some earthquake relief and eating vegetarian thalis in anyone’s house that Invited me and I learned phrases like Kem Cho and Majama. I saw india thru the eyes of a kid.. it changed me. it inspired me to take music seriously and keep pushing the boundaries of what we can do. I never thought when i left india i would invited back to perform and collaborate with the producers and actors here .. last night came here feeling beat up after the shows and travel and got to my hotel at 2 am just to see the mumbai marathon opening concert outside my door.. –?? was perfect to not sleep and watch all the hollywood hits perform during the sunrise — haha but fuck it .. it reminds me of when I used to crawl around making money wherever I could to get by on the road and how life on tour now seems too easy at times and it’s good to let it be a little out of control . I wouldn’t have been here if it wasn’t for the times I lived day to day and everything I did was spontaneous because my only plan every day was to hit the road and find a shower and not get food poisoning. I managed about 33% success rate . Leaving mumbai I can’t help but to feel it’s my responsibility to tell everyone to drop out of school and go ride around and learn stuff (@thejoelarkin –)

One of my most important yearly rituals is to take real time off and away from the technology that I love and which is the conduit of my creativity and success. Stepping away from the music, the scene, the internet and refocusing inwards has always bought back balance to my mind & body and always resulted in fresh ideas, renewed energy and focused inspiration. I’d recommend this to everyone in our scene, specially to those new to our industry. Often the most inspired ideas come only when you take a step away from your normal surroundings and leave the constant noise of today’s society behind. See/Chat/Type to you all sometime in February. —-
