Figure skater Jimmy Ma performed at the 2018 National Championships at the SAP Center today (Jan. 5) and added an eccentric and unexpected choice with his song selection: The New York skater performed to a bass-heavy Propaganda instrumental, before seguing into DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s viral, high octane “Turn Down For What.”
Ma’s choice of the uptempo record with penetrating vocals came as a surprise to some. While the competition recently allowed performers to use songs with singing in them as soundtracks, “Turn Down For What” was a stark contrast from the sport’s usually serene vibe of traditional classical pieces.

The newfound change in the rule is sure to bring more diversity in energy for future performances, and to a positive reaction, it seems. Commentators of the televised event expressed excitement when the club smash came on during Ma’s performance, and social media also showed a strong reaction.
