Drum and bass stalwart DJ Marky teams up with long-time collaborator Makoto on “Bloody Mary,” a jazzy roller scheduled for release next week on Marky’s own Innerground. Its piano vamps and trumpet noodling, all set to turbo-speed breaks, got us alternately be-bopping and head-nodding in our seats. So we made sure CODERS got the first listen below:
Marky, born Marco Antonio Silva in Brazil, made his entrance into the global drum and bass scene in the late ’90s after being discovered by Bryan Gee, head of V Recordings and another one of the genre’s most famous names. He went on to hold residencies at Movement and The End, two of London’s premiere d ‘n’ b destinations. Makoto, who names LTJ Bukem and Goldie as some of his biggest inspirations, also entered the scene in the late ’90s, but exploded in popularity in the early 2000s with the release of his first studio album, “Human Elements.”
“Bloody Mary” will appear on the “Sounds of the Innerground Part III” compilation out April 15.
