British rapper Dizzee Rascal achieved his first U.K. No. 1 single yesterday (July 6) with “Dance Wiv Me” (Dirtee Stank), featuring Calvin Harris & Chrome. Meanwhile, Coldplay began week number four atop the album chart with “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” (Parlophone/EMI).
Rascal, aka east Londoner Dylan Mills, has been charting singles in Britain since 2003 but only once before made the top 10, with “Stand Up Tall” in 2004. His collaborator, Scottish producer Harris, had consecutive U.K. top 10 hits of his own last year on Sony BMG with “Acceptable in the ’80s” and “The Girls.”
Last week’s U.K. No. 1, Ne-Yo’s “Closer” (Def Jam/Universal), fell to No. 2, as Basshunter, otherwise known as Swedish DJ Jonas Altberg, debuted at No. 3 with “All I Ever Wanted” (Hard2Beat). It’s the follow-up to the new year U.K. No. 1 “Now You’re Gone.”
Another DJ act, Ironik, climbed 11-6 with “Stay With Me” (Asylum/Warner Music), as the Ting Tings’ “Shut Up and Let Me Go” (Columbia/Sony BMG) jumped 24-15. Madonna’s “Give It To Me” (Warner Bros.) improved 25-18.
Coldplay’s album kept its lead over Duffy’s former No. 1 “Rockferry” (A&M/Universal), at No. 2 again, while Chris Brown’s re-promoted “Exclusive” (Jive/Sony BMG) climbed 6-3. The Ting Tings’ “We Started Nothing,” another former chart-topper, jumped back 11-6 and Amy Winehouse’s “Deluxe Edition” of “Back to Black” (Universal Island) rose 13-7 following her June 28 appearance at the Glastonbury Festival.
Popular folk artist Seth Lakeman came in at No. 8 with “Poor Man’s Heaven” (Relentless/Virgin/EMI), while My Chemical Romance started at No. 12 with “The Black Parade Is Dead” (Warner Bros.) and longtime hitmaker Eddy Grant landed at No. 16 with “The Very Best Of — Road to Reparation” (Mercury/Universal Music TV). The Subways’ second, Butch Vig-produced album “All or Nothing” (Infectious/Warner Music), debuted at No.17.
The Coldplay album is in second week atop European Top 100 Albums, while Duffy’s “Mercy” (A&M/Universal) is spending a fourth consecutive week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, and fifth altogether.
