Fresh off their sophomore album release and debut performance on Saturday Night Live, Disclosure plans to tour for the next year and play out their new records. The Englishmen recently stopped by Radio.com to discuss the creative process behind Caracal, in addition to their experience working with stars such as Lorde and The Weeknd.
In terms of artist selection on the LP, Howard said, “We choose to work with them before the song’s written,” with Guy adding, “We wanted to get people who are mutual fans and understand how we work.” The duo says they are heavily involved in the songwriting process and reveal that their song “Magnets” featuring Lorde was wrapped in two days.
“When we worked with Ella [Lorde], we sat down and wrote the majority of the melodies and the chords all around the piano, and then I think we went away for a day, came back the next day and wrote all the lyrics again all together,” said Howard. Once all parties were happy with the lyrics, “Guy started working on the beat, and then we brought the production together, and then we just laid it down.”
They collectively emphasize that there is nothing wrong with an artist singing a song they have not written themselves, but firmly stated that all credit should be given where it is due. Regarding “Magnets,” Howard humbly said, “It was just me, Guy, [producer] Jimmy Napes and Lorde in the room, and that was it. There’s no ghostwriters, there’s no anything like that; it’s just us, and we write the songs.”
Disclosure is set to embark on a brief U.K. tour this year to celebrate Caracal before they go forth on a more extensive tour in the New Year. Tickets to their performances can be found here.
