It has been a little over a decade since we first heard from this Melbourne-based trio and in that time frame, the group has slowly matured into something “post-rock” or “indie-instrumental” fans hold dear.
“Cinder” is the D3’s seventh offering, and it still has the signature guitar-drums-violin approach, but there are subtle variations that make this a different record. For one, Cat Power’s Chan Marshall shows up on “Great Waves,” which she co-wrote. Her voice was made for their sound, and the track comes off like the first attempt ever at “pop” by the band. Second, most songs are kept in the four-minute range, which is short and sweet by Dirty Three standards. The result is about two-and-a-half times more tracks.
The band still has a knack for trying the listener’s patience (“Flutter”), and with the shrinking song times, the opportunity for its beloved crescendos are fewer. But when Warren Ellis commands the piano during “Last Dance,” it exemplifies the passion these guys have in making mood music.
