Director Stephen Kessler struggled to get the songwriter/singer/’70s celebrity Paul Williams to cooperate with his plan to make a documentary on his life. One day Williams begrudgingly said OK and they wound up spending the next three years together.
The result is “Paul Williams Still Alive,” which had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, played theatrically in June and was recently released on iTunes. It will play on Showtime beginning in January.
In an interview at the Billboard Hollywood Reporter Film and TV Music Conference, Kessler spoke about how different a film he wound up with than what he initially attempted to chronicle.
