Over the past decade, Diplo has mastered the art of taking a catchy pop or indie song and priming it for the club. His SoundCloud page has more than 4 million followers who hang on his Diplo’s song uploads, with another 2.7 million followers on the page for his dancehall side project Major Lazer.
YouTube is where you can find some of Diplo’s best early songs, such as his remix of Brazilian band CSS’s “Let’s Make Love” from circa 2006, his 2008 remix of Marlena Shaw’s “California Soul” that exploded once it became the soundtrack to a series of commercials, and, of course, his 2009 remix of Britney Spears’ “Circus” that took it from a radio hit to dancehall-tinged party anthem.
To fete his Billboard cover story (on stands Aug. 22), we combed the DJ’s archives and plucked our favorite five Diplo remixes ever. (For consistency purposes, we’ve kept this list to SoundCloud tracks and are not including songs he’s produced, but rather good old-fashioned remixes.)
