CL is prepping her upcoming English full-length, but the K-pop superstar is serving fans “Doctor Pepper” as an appetizer ahead of her official debut single.
The swaggering, Atlanta-style rap cut was produced by Diplo and sees CL handling the catchy chorus while spitting bars alongside Riff Raff and OG Maco. For CL’s part, in style there’s a little bit of Rihanna, a little Miley, but the 2NE1 star more than holds her own, setting up even more intrigue for what she’s preparing for her solo album.
CL spoke about the track’s somewhat-hilarious origins. “Diplo canceled a session on me and I was so mad at him,” the 24-year-old told The Fader. “I was drinking a can of Dr. Pepper and wrote the song so I could go home as soon as possible. Diplo ended up loving it.”
While CL’s chill delivery might confuse some longtime fans who have fallen in love with her attitude-heavy raps, Diplo was one step ahead of fans when talking about the track. “‘Doctor Pepper’ is something that might not register that well with actual K-pop,” he explained, adding, “But the net around K-pop is so wide that it can be anything with confidence and style. That’s what CL brings to it.”
The Jack ÜU producer also gave a little insight to CL’s upcoming LP saying, “I’ve been active in CL’s first full-length album, mostly trying to find a right balance between glossy K-pop attitude and keeping CL positioned where she belongs—as the baddest, coolest female out right now.”
“Doctor Pepper” hits iTunes next Tuesday, May 26.
