When Point Break, the highly anticipated remake of the 1991 surfer heist tale, hits screens in December, Dig the Kid hopes to catch a wave of success with its end title theme, “Still Breathing.” The unsigned rock trio landed the plum placement through an open call via online artist platform ReverbNation. Point Break was the breakout success story at 2013 American Film Market, selling in every territory even before a cast was attached. (Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez take on Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze’s original roles). In an unprecedented move, the film opens in China on Dec. 3, three weeks before its domestic Christmas Day release.
The call for songs drew more than 7,500 submissions, according to ReverbNation founder/CEO Mike Doernberg. The ReverbNation A&R staff curated the process, passing the top 100 candidates on to their partner in the campaign, Alcon Sleeping Giant Music Group, a Los Angeles-based company that serves as the music arm for Alcon Entertainment’s film and TV projects. Alcon is releasing the movie with partners Warner Bros. and Lionsgate. Two other songs from Swiss hip-hop act Sempe were also discovered through the open call and are heard in the background in the film.
Though Alcon Sleeping Giant co-CEO Michael Hodges felt the song Dig the Kid originally submitted to ReverbNation wasn’t right for the movie, he and co-producer Ken Caillat (Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours) heard something in the group that they knew they could work with.
“We believed there was something special about this band that we could help shape,” Hodges says. “We were focused on finding a band and a song that you wanted to hear over and over again with a sound that captured the essence of the film.”
Armed with a sizzle reel of the film and some script details, Dig the Kid penned the dramatic, sweeping mid-tempo track. “Musically, we wanted something big and high energy. Something with a huge, powerful chorus,” says Dig the Kid lead singer Cory Todd. “Since it’s going to be released worldwide, it has to be something people can sing and that grabs them.”
“Still Breathing,” released on Alcon Sleeping Giant/Universal Music Group, goes to rock and alternative radio and iTunes on Nov. 13 and will be promoted to radio by UMG’s indie label arm, Caroline.
“Still Breathing” is also featured in a Chrysler/Point Break ad campaign that premiered Nov. 8 and will run through the end of the month for Jeep Renegade. (Chrysler paired very successfully with Interscope earlier this year to break “Renegades,” a song by developing Interscope act X Ambassadors). “We’re excited that the song is able to move beyond the boundaries of the film,” Todd says. “We’re looking forward to the exposure it can bring us.”

The soundtrack for Point Break comes out globally on Dec. 4. In addition to “Still Breathing” and Sempe’s songs, the soundtrack includes several tracks exclusive to the project from Justin Young, MRKTS, and Genevieve, as well as cuts from Andrew Watt and Steve Aoki & Headhunterz.
