Italian band Stoop, U.S. hip hoppers Move.Meant and British electronic specialist Duke Dumont ticked all the right boxes to win prizes tonight (Oct. 4) at the 6th annual Diesel-U-Music Awards.
The gala, hosted by British radio personality Lauren Laverne, played out at London’s Shoreditch Town Hall.
Stoop stopped their opponents to win the rock award, which was judged by Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood and Echo and the Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch.
Move.Meant took out the hip hop/urban award, a category which was decided by a team of judges featuring DJ/producer Mark Ronson.
Duke Dumont, meanwhile, was declared winner of the electronic award. Scottish DJ Mylo, a former winner at the event, and Belgian mash-up pioneers 2ManyDJs were judges on the category.
Also on the night, New York-based four-piece the Epochs took out the inaugural public award. The fusion act, which had entered the rock category, won via a public vote on the official Diesel-U-Music Web site.
As expected, veteran glam-rock act Roxy Music and legendary rock photographer Mick Rock were respectively lauded with the Channel 4 radio music icon and contribution to music awards.
Co-sponsored by Billboard, the event has been established with a goal to promote unsigned and emerging acts from around the globe. “Diesel strongly believes in supporting the freshest, unspoiled and most original creativity, that’s why we launched this project,” comments Renzo Rosso, president and founder of Diesel.
British national commercial broadcaster Channel 4 will beam the ceremony on Oct. 22.
