Diane Warren composed “I’m Standing With You” for Chrissy Metz in the film Breakthrough, which scored an Oscar nod for best original song this year. But that hit took on a whole new meaning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Warren teamed up with director Gev Miron and composer/arranger Sharon Farber to turn Metz’s uplifting anthem into an epic chorus sung by more than 170 artists from six continents as showcased in the monumental music video. The global effort has raised more than $5 million for the United Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization (WHO) since its premiere last Friday (May 22) and hopes to raise $7.5 million in the fundraiser’s remaining 34 days.
“I am honored to have my song being used to unite people from around the world and to be involved in such an inspiring project. Knowing that there are people out there standing with you can be healing and comforting,” Warren said in a press release. “Being a first responder is a daunting task, and we are here to show support for them and appreciate all that they are doing, and are thinking of all those who are suffering as we stand together.”
Screens popped up around the world’s famous tourist spots to digitally feature national talent, from 9-year-old American singer Eden Kontesz-Farber in Times Square to Greek singer Mario Frangoulis in front of the Acropolis to Australian artist Tina Arena on the Sydney Opera House to Turkish musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek near the Hagia Sophia. A 160-piece orchestra including medical professionals from the Texas Medical Center Orchestra joined the long artist lineup, as the frontline workers recorded their videos from their homes.
“Music is a universal language, and a powerful tool to uplift and inspire. During these uncertain times, we have decided to take action and help those in need, those who are isolated at home, those who work tirelessly to mend to others, and all of us who feel the pain of this horrible epidemic,” Farber and Miron said in the release. “As artists, we can utilize our art and help others by elevating their spirits and at the same time, encourage them to become part of the effort of fighting the novel coronavirus pandemic, by donating to theUnited Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization and share their own stories of ‘Standing’ with others by using the hashtag #ImStandingWithYou.”
