This week’s spin comes from Detroit’s Flint Eastwood (aka Jax Anderson). The fast rising upstart is fresh off a whirlwind 2017 that brought her acclaimed debut EP Broke Royalty, released via Neon Gold Records (Christine and the Queens, Tove Lo, Charli XCX), as well as festival debuts at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. At the latter, she joined the annual “Superjam” to perform “Get Up Offa That Thing” by James Brown with Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Jon Batiste as her backing band and even sang back-up for Chance The Rapper during his “Hey Ya” re-work.
In her hometown of Detroit, she has also been instrumental in supporting the local music scene, co-founding Assemble Sound, a collaboration studio space for local musicians to “meet, find resources, and ultimately create good art.” Together they raised funds to purchase a church from the 1870’s and renovated it as a community, with the space now where Flint writes and records her music, and even sparked the concept of her Broke Royalty EP.
Today, Eastwood is looking back with this week’s #TBT Mixtape, inspired by a personal family tragedy and the songs that helped her “cope with sadness.” In addition, the rising Detroit star reveals her new self-directed and edited taxidermy-laden “Monster” video, premiering exclusively via Billboard.

“I wrote the song ‘Monster’ about the dark nights that took place after the passing of my mom & the moment I discovered that things would eventually be okay again. These are songs I’d listen to on repeat during the moments after her passing when I felt like I was going to break,” Flint says. “Songs like ‘What Me Worry’ & ‘Are You?’ made me forget the sadness while songs like ‘Laughing With’ & ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’ helped me to embrace it. ‘September’ & ‘Country Road’ were two of my mom’s favorite songs & ‘Black Bird’ was the song my mom would request I play for her on guitar when she was at her most ill. These songs have helped me through some of the hardest moments in my life – I hope they can help you as well.”
