“The “Warsaw” beat has a sinister, dystopian feel to it: mean snares, futuristic synths, verbed out chords. It’s tough as hell,” Dessa tells Billboard. “When Paper Tiger first sent it to me, I thought, ‘This doesn’t sound like anything I’d do. I want it.'”
Her usual narrative storytelling took on the beat’s character, becoming “impressionistic” and full of imagery like “new shoes and a bullet-proof dress.”
“I put the beat on repeat and drank my share of Jameson to get it done,” Dessa says.
“Parts of Speech,” her follow-up to 2011’s “Castor, the Twin,” is due June 25.
