Depeche Mode tops the weekly ranking of Hot Tours with ticket sales reported from the second European leg of the Delta Machine tour that played arenas in 18 cities during November and December.
Revenue totaled $19.2 million from 19 performances during the fall jaunt that kicked off in Belfast on Nov. 7. All of the venues in this week’s tally hosted the veteran English band for a single night except Berlin’s O2 World arena. With sold out shows on Nov. 25 and 27, the 15,000-seat arena sold tickets to more than 28,000 fans during the two-show run.
The Delta Machine tour launched back in May with an initial run through cities in 23 European countries along with a stop in Tel Aviv, Israel. From 32 reported concerts during the first European leg, sold tickets topped 1.1 million. Next was a 22-city North American run that began in August, wrapping in Texas with an appearance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Oct. 11. With sales from the fall trek through Europe added to the tour’s overall counts for the year, the combined gross for the tour now stands at $119 million from 1.6 million sold tickets at 73 performances. The European leg is set to resume on January 15 in Barcelona.
Taylor Swift enters the weekly Hot Tours recap in the second slot based on $18 million in sales from the country star’s final tour leg of 2013, a five-city swing through New Zealand and Australia. The Red tour kicked off its Oceania trek at Vector Arena in Auckland with shows on three consecutive nights beginning Nov. 29. With more than 30,000 fans in attendance at the arena during the run, ticket sales topped $3.8 million (NZ$3.1 million). Stadium concerts followed in four Australian markets in early December, marking the first time a solo female artist has headlined a stadium tour down under since Madonna’s Girlie Show jaunt in 1993. Attendance totaled more than 148,000 from her sold out performances in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. Etihad Stadium in Melbourne drew the largest crowd among the four venues with 47,257 in the house on Dec. 14. The Red tour is Swift’s third outing in the country. She also played Australia during her Fearless tour in 2010 and Speak Now in 2012.
