Back in 2006, deadmau5 and fellow mau5trap producer Steve Duda satirized the absurdity of the then-burgeoning dance scene with “This Is the Hook,” their debut single as BSOD. “It’s catchy, you like it,” implored the vocoded vocals, “now it is time for the breakdown.”
As it turns out, the distorted techno anthem was catchy and we did like it, and we liked the duo’s following EPs Played Out, Pay Here To Click, Trap Me and Last Life too.
On Thursday (April 9), BSOD — which according to a press release “could be short for Blue Screen of Death or Better Sounding on Drugs” — returns with “Afterburner,” their first new music in six years.
Premiering exclusively on Billboard Dance below, the track is a darkly thumping banger with a sinewy melodic thread that builds to a place of propulsive techno catharsis that’s likely to get you headbanging during your current housebound dance sessions. “Afterburner” comes from BSOD’s No Way, Get Real EP, out Friday via mau5trap.
You can get a sneak peek of the EP during a BSOD livestream happening Thursday night on Mixer at 8 p.m. ET. Hear “Afterburner” below.
