The Dead and Bob Dylan will co-headline the second leg of the former’s Summer Getaway Tour, set to kick off July 29 in a yet-to-be-announced location. Dead lyricist Robert Hunter will also accompany the band on both legs of the trek.
The tour’s second leg will consist of 10 dates, ending Aug. 10. Currently six destinations are confirmed: Tampa, Fla. (July 30), Aug. 2 (Joliet, Ill.), Somerset, Wis. (Aug. 3), Indianapolis (Aug. 5), Columbus, Ohio (Aug. 6), and Darien Center, N.Y. (Aug. 8). Tickets for these and the yet-to-be-confirmed dates go on sale May 3.
Aside from a handful of summer 1995 shows, the Dead and Dylan last hit the road together in 1987 on a co-headlining stadium tour. The event spawned the seven-track 1989 Columbia live album “Dylan & the Dead,” which featured collaborative versions of such Dylan classics as “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and “All Along the Watchtower,” as well as more obscure songs such as “Joey.” That tour’s stops at in Oakland and Anaheim, Calif., comprise the recently issued the Dead’s “Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn. First leg tickets are already on sale via Fourth of July Picnic outside of Austin, Texas. Also on the bill for the two-day (July 4-5) event will be Toby Keith, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Pat Green, and Billy Bob Thornton.
The Dead is promising to perform old favorites for fans, as well as new material. The group is comprised of surviving original members of the Grateful Dead — drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, bassist Phil Lesh, and guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir — as well as keyboardists Jeff Chimenti and Rob Barraco, and lead guitarist Jimmy Herring. Bringing a female voice back into the veteran group on the tour will be vocalist Joan Osborne.
