Former En Vogue and Lucy Pearl singer Dawn Robinson will release her first solo album Oct. 16 on Q Records. The album, titled “Dawn,” will be supported by a tour with dates to be announced, according to a spokesperson. The album finds Robinson collaborating with an assortment of songwriters and producers, including Pajam (Sisqo), Travon Potts (Christina Aguilera), Allstar (Joe), R&B singer Kenni Ski (Christion) and members of the production team the Mysphitz (Musiq Soulchild).
The first single is “Envious,” which will be shipped to radio in mid-September. A video will be shot in the coming weeks, but a director has not yet been chosen.
In November, Robinson told Billboard.com she was excited to record a solo album because she didn’t have the chance to write her own material in En Vogue. “We weren’t allowed to put our words on paper and, you know, your thoughts on life and how you see life, so I have a lot of back-up from that,” she said while prepping the album.
The singer was a principal member of the all-star trio Lucy Pearl (which includes former Tony! Toni! Tone! member Raphael Saadiq and former A Tribe Called Quest DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad), until she was replaced by Joi last November. The group’s self-titled album peaked at No. 26 on The Billboard 200 last June and has sold 592,000 copies in the U.S. to date, according to SoundScan.
