Composer David Newman will receive BMI’s Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at its annual Film & Television Awards on May 20.
Newman is best known for his scores for comedic films, including “Throw Momma from the Train,” “The War of the Roses” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” He received an Academy Award nomination in 1998 for his score to the animated “Anastasia.” In addition to his composition work, Newman is the president of the board of directors of the American Youth Symphony.
Previous winners of the Richard Kirk Award include Christopher Young, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin, John Williams and Newman’s brother, Thomas Newman.
This year, previous Richard Kirk Award winner Post will receive the Classic Contribution Award in recognition of his work with the BMI Foundation’s Pete Carpenter Fellowship. Post’s work includes the themes for “NYPD Blue,” “Hill Street Blues,” “L.A. Law” and “Law and Order.”
Hosted by BMI president and CEO Del Bryant and VP, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer Ross, the Film & Television Awards honor the composers of the the top-grossing films and top-rated TV programming from 2008.
The event will be held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles.
