Duran Duran delivered a three-song finale at a concert tribute to the music of David Lynch on April 1, saluting the director with songs from their hitmaking heyday — a disconnect from the rest of the two-hour evening, but somehow quite Lynch-ian in its appeal. Each performance had a spark of personality, a rarity in these tribute shows.
Duran Duran and Moby were the only acts to perform their own material — Lynch directed a Duran Duran concert film; Moby is a longtime friend — as the Flaming Lips, Lykke Li, Sky Ferreira?, Donovan and a teaming of members from Tennis and Twin Peaks performed songs from Lynch’s films at the Theater at the Ace Hotel. Angelo Badalamenti led the house band through his famous themes from Twin Peaks; Rebekah Del Rio gave a stunning a cappella rendition of “Llorando” — Roy Orbison’s “Crying” — from Mulholland Drive; and members of the Flaming Lips delivered a twisted seven-minute mash-up of a piece inspired by the first reel of Eraserhead and score from the end of Elephant Man.
As is to be expected, much of the music was moody and slow, picking up greatly with Moby’s set of “Go,” on which he played congas, and “The Perfect Lie,” which he led on rhythm guitar. Curious that he didn’t involve Wayne Coyne? who sang the song on the Innocents album, though he did chastise the audience for not singing along with him.
Lynch came on last, accompanied by Donovan, who earlier had sung “Love Me Tender.” He read a short poem that concluded “may everyone be free of disease and suffering belong to no one. Peace.” It ended the evening on a curious note, but then don’t all of Lynch’s projects do that?
The concert included short films about Transcendental meditation and the work the Lynch Foundation does to get TM into schools, prisons and agencies that assist at-risk individuals. Specific purpose of Wednesday’s show was to raise enough money to fund TM sessions for 1,000 students on a waiting list within the Los Angeles Unified School System.
