David Bowie has been posthumously shortlisted for the British artist of the year prize at next week’s BBC Music Awards.
The legendary singer, who died on Jan. 10 just two days after the release of what turned out to be his last studio album, Blackstar, is nominated alongside Adele, Calvin Harris, Coldplay and Jess Glynne.
Blackstar gave Bowie his first No. 1 in the U.S, his 10th chart-topper in his homeland and was a hit across the globe with fans and critics. The set also earned a prestigious Mercury Music Prize-nomination, losing out to Skepta’s Konnichiwa.
Bowie’s nomination at the BBC Music Awards follows his surprise snub for album of the year, a category which features LPs by Adele, Coldplay, Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Michael Kiwanuka and Rick Astley.
Adele is looking to repeat; the superstar singer took out British artist and live performance of the year in 2015.
This year’s awards will take place Dec. 12 at ExCel in London and will be broadcast live on BBC One.
John Legend, Kaiser Chiefs, Emeli Sande, Zara Larsson, Lukas Graham and Izzy Bizu, the newly crowned BBC Music Introducing artist of the year, are among the performers lined-up for the event.
