Certain DJs rise from the crowded scene to legendary heights, and they do that not by playing the hits everyone loves, but by pushing the boundaries and introducing partyers to new sounds they could never have imagined. Icons like Carl Cox have inspired countless people to get behind the decks, and some of those inspired DJs have gone on to become icons themselves.
Take Danny Tenaglia, for instance. The three-time International Dance Music award winner is a leader in the underground world of grooves, but he can remember being a slack-jawed music lover on a New York City dance floor taking in the masterful work of a living hero.
“Carl’s had a major impact on me for 20 strong years now,” Tenaglia says in an emailed statement. “He’s probably the main person I’d credit for inspiring me [in] having gone from being a deep house and New York tribal sound [DJ] to a harder, tech house and techno sound. [This was] way back when I was the resident DJ at Twilo, but with never forgetting our roots and still loving that passionately too. He’s given me many great opportunities playing together and I will always appreciate him as a friend and mentor.”
Today, he pays the man back the best way he knows how: by merging the sounds of his past, present and future in a very-special remix of Cox’ collaboration with Nicole Moudaber, “See You Next Tuesday.” He calls it the “Return to Twilo” remix, and it’s coming out as part of an official re-release and remix package on Moudaber’s MOOD Records on Friday.
His take is nearly 10 minutes long as it twists and turns through rhythms and feelings, just as one might wander through the dark hallways of an old-school NYC nightclub. It’s dark but not brooding, a hefty beat designed to get dancers moving even while it sends shivers up their sequined spines.
It’s a true musical love letter to Cox, Tenaglia’s early days in the scene and the incredible work Moudaber has done leading a new generation of dance lovers to the decks.
“Nicole is probably the main DJ today that, without even realizing it, has helped me to push myself to keep on and stick with it through good times and bad,” he says. “My approach to this remix was to not try and be too hard or fast, as there were several great mixes done. I felt this enabled me to just be myself and go at it with a 123 bpm, swinging groove and leave it up to DJ’s to extend or edit and to pitch it to a tempo they desire. It sounds cool at 127 bpm also.”
The coolest thing about this remix? The love flows both ways.
“Danny’s one of my all time heroes and it’s an honor to call him my friend,” Moudaber says in an emailed statement. “I was elated when he agreed to remix ‘See You Next Tuesday’ as a ‘Return To Twilo’ mix, reinvigorating the track with lots of swing and paying tribute to the many epic nights we spent at one of the most iconic clubs in New York.”
