Daft Punk makes a leap on the Social 50 tally, rising 38-5 and breaking the top five for the first time. The French electronic duo made its just-released album, “Random Access Memories” (May 21), available for streaming in the iTunes Store on May 13.
The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist pageviews, song plays and reactions.
The ascension in the tally comes as nearly a direct result of the iTunes stream. A 219% rise in conversation on Facebook took place during the week, which subsequently led to the addition of 113,000 new fans on the platform (up 56%). Fans reacted by heading to Wikipedia to read up on Daft Punk as well, evidenced by the 120% increase in traffic caused by the 842,000 people who visited their page.
On Vevo, Daft Punk timed an album-unboxing video (wherein the vinyl packaging was revealed) for release on May 13, which contributed to the 13 million views (up 42%) received by the group during the charting week.
Farther down the tally, Bridgit Mendler makes her Social 50 debut at No. 46. It follows the release of her latest single, “Hurricane,” and the launch of her new online series called “The Hurricane Sessions.” For the “Sessions,” she performs covers of popular songs on her Vevo channel. On May 15, Mendler released a cover of Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” that received nearly 500,000 views in its first week.
Demi Lovato continues to rise (9-4), breaking the top five for the first time in the 120 weeks she’s resided on the Social 50. This week she celebrates the No. 3 Billboard 200 debut of her fourth album, “Demi.” On the Social 50, her ascension comes with a 15% increase in weekly fan acquisition, allowing Lovato to add more than 449,000 new fans to her overall fanbase during the charting week.
She makes substantial gains in the video department as well as she releases a three-part video series to her Vevo channel entitled “The Story of DEMI” (starting on May 13). Each of the three parts has around 300,000 views to date, which have contributed to the more htan 15 million views towards her channel during the charting week.
To finish recapping the top 10 Justin Bieber remains No. 1, while Taylor Swift rises (4-2), as does Rihanna (5-3) and Jennifer Lopez (8-6). Justin Timberlake holds steady at No. 7, Beyonce falls 6-8, Pitbull jumps 14-9 and PSY anchors the top 10, falling 2-10.
