Singer-songwriter Curtis Peoples is no stranger to Billboard charts, as three Pierce the Veil songs he had a hand in co-writing (“King for a Day,” “The Divine Zero” and “Circles”) have hit the Hot Rock Songs ranking.
In addition to writing for many rock acts, Peoples has released numerous solo projects, showcasing his melodic tendencies. With his latest outing, “Tidal Wave,” featuring Holy Wars, Peoples steps out of his comfort zone, serving up not only his knack for pop hooks but also a bit of that rock vibe that has pollinated many of his co-writes.
Billboard is exclusively premiering “Tidal Wave,” which Peoples co-wrote with Vic Fuentes, lead singer of Pierce the Veil. It was produced by frequent collaborator Colin creeV.
Peoples and Fuentes have been friends since kindergarten and started collaborating on music in high school. Peoples tells Billboard that “Tidal Wave” was written at a point where the pair began playing with the idea of forming a new act on the side. “We started writing songs with no pressure or real plan and ended up getting some songs that we wouldn’t have normally written for my solo project or for Pierce the Veil,” he says.
“Another of those songs, ‘Castaways,’ came out this past summer and was produced by Vic and features our buddy Brad Hargreaves, drummer of Third Eye Blind, on drums,” People notes. “Having Brad play on our song was a personal dream of ours.”
Fuentes says that “Tidal Wave” presented “sort of a challenge to ourselves to see if we could make something that was out of our comfort zone. Initially, the song was meant to be for a side project that we were going to start together, but we got tired of sitting on it and wanted to show it to the world. Hope everyone enjoys our experiment!”
Meanwhile, a new Pierce the Veil album is expected later this year.
As for Holy Wars’ featured turn on “Tidal Wave,” singer Kat Leon says, “I really connected with the songwriting. Lyrically, this song really resonated with me and was so enjoyable to sing. It’s one of those songs where I didn’t write it, but I wish I had.”
Peoples and Leon have been writing together for the upcoming release by Holy Wars (the duo of Leon and Nicholas Perez) and Leon feels that because of their “experiences working so close together on co-writes for synchs and Holy Wars material, Curtis and I really have a great understanding of writing from an honest place, and making a song fit for what we are going for, while never losing who we are in the process. I feel Curtis did that so seamlessly on ‘Tidal Wave’ that when I heard it, I instantly knew how big this song can be and had to be a part of it.”
In addition to working on his own music, Pierce the Veil’s and Holy Wars, Peoples is also currently writing with Third Eye Blind, Grayscale, Megan Davies, Valerie Broussard and TRACES for their upcoming projects. “I love that my career as a songwriter has freed me up to kind of do whatever and take more risks in my own music,” he says. “Whether I’m writing hard rock with Pierce the Veil or Grayscale; indie alternative stuff with artists like TRACES; teen pop; or more singer-songwriter based songs, I enjoy the ‘new day, new sound’ mentality I get to experience creatively on the regular.”
“Tidal Wave” will be released Friday, Jan. 18, independently through Curtis’ 88 Records label.
