Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine were 11 and 12 years old when Curly Sue, the 1991 Jim Belushi family comedy about a scam artist and his orphan girl sidekick, came out in theaters. This probably explains why The Voice judges were so excited to discover that the real Curly Sue, aka Alisan Porter, was the person auditioning in front of them on the Season 10 premiere Monday night.
Porter wowed all four judges with a stunning rendition of “Blue Bayou” before they had any idea who she was. When Pharrell, Levine, Aguilera and Blake Shelton all turned around to vie for her for their team, the child-actress-turned-singer could barely believe her eyes.
When the judges asked Porter what her story was, she mentioned she had been on Star Search (as had Aguilera) and was a child actor. When Shelton asked if she had acted in anything they would have heard of, she admitted, “I played Curly Sue in the movie Curly Sue.”
“Shut up. No way!” Levine exclaimed as the others gasped. Porter then explained that she got sober eight years ago, married the love of her life and had children before deciding to pursue her passion for singing.
“I really am moved by your story,” Aguilera said, her voice breaking as she wiped tears from her eyes. Levine then proclaimed, “You’re gonna win The Voice.”
