As of Monday morning (Oct. 29), the soccer star has 144,320,476 followers on the social media platform, while Gomez, who has held the title for more than two years, now trails him at 144,312,745 Instagram followers.
It’s no surprise that Ronaldo’s ascent to the top spot occurred while Gomez herself is unplugged from technology. In her last Instagram post from Sept. 23, the “Wolves” singer announced that she would be “taking a social media break.”
“As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given,” Gomez wrote last month.
Shortly after announcing her social media break, Gomez reportedly entered a mental health treatment facility on Oct. 11 to address her depression and anxiety after suffering an “emotional breakdown.”
Mood lol (I was looking at myself in the mirror -like an idiot!) Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.
