Courtney Love is going to be an opera star — an offbeat, non-traditional opera star, but an opera star nonetheless.
Love has been cast in the upcoming pop opera Kansas City Choir Boy, which will present 10 shows during New York’s Prototype: Opera/Theater/Now Festival from Jan. 8 to 17.
“I love the concept, and I’m loving the music,” Love told The New York Times. “I’m playing it constantly. I’m looking to do things that are different. I just finished a rock tour of Australia, and it was great, but I’ve been doing that for a long time. I wanted to do something challenging.”

But this is a non-traditional, popular music-infused “opera,” composer Todd Almond assured the New York Times. “When I say ‘opera,’ I don’t mean it’s in an operatic style,” he said. “I mean it in the sense that it’s a group of songs that tell a story. I write musicals, I write plays and I write what I call opera.”
The Prototype Festival’s official web site sheds some more light on what’s in store. It describes the show as “a love song for the computer age and a product of the 24-hour news cycle that feeds on the stories of the anonymous ‘missing.’”
Kansas City Choir Boy is directed by Kevin Newbury, with Love performing the music alongside Almond, the composer and co-star.
