Universal Music Publishing Group stalwart Paul Connolly has been elevated to the new function as president of Europe/managing director U.K.
London-based Connolly will continue to oversee the company’s European activities and helm the firm’s U.K. operation. He continues to report to David Renzer, chairman/CEO of UMPG.
In a statement, Connolly says the promotion “will give me further opportunities to build on the great results we’ve achieved artistically and commercially over many years.”
Since joining the firm — then MCA Music — in 1988 as an A&R scout, the company has signed and re-negotiated terms with the Clash, Smashing Pumpkins, the Smiths and Elton John, among others.
Connolly was appointed A&R director in 1991 and managing director in 1994. In 1997, he was named VP of MCA Music International in addition to his role of U.K. managing director. Two years later, he rose to executive VP, Europe and managing director, U.K. of newly formed Universal Music Publishing.
