Ta-Nehisi Coates’s award-winning Between the World and Me is getting the theatrical treatment, and the first staged reading inspired by his 2015 book will be brought to life by a star-studded cast.
At New York’s Apollo Theater on April 2-3, Common, Angela Bassett and Susan Kelechi Watson of This Is Us lead the Between the World and Me cast, though different performers will take the stage each night. (Common and Bassett will be joined by Tony-nominated actress Michelle Wilson on April 2; Watson will read on April 3, along with Pauletta Washington.)
GRAMMY-nominated jazz impresario Jason Moran will be contributing music to the program as well, which is helmed by the Apollo’s own Executive Producer, Kamilah Forbes. Coates and Moran collaborated with Forbes for the development of the project, which incorporates staged readings from Coates’ text with video projections and Moran’s compositions.
