The third annual Heineken Red Star Soul concert series will kick off Aug. 6 at Boulevard3 in Los Angeles, featuring performances by Ashanti and Goapele.
From there the tour will make stops in eight other major markets with a lineup that includes Keyshia Cole, Raheem DeVaughn, Chrisette Michelle and Musiq Soulchild. Also performing on select dates will be Grammy-winning songwriter producer Bryan-Michael Cox, who is recording his own album as an artist.
Returning as host for the third year is Kenny Burns, emcee of the popular BET show “Black Poker Stars Invitational.” Burns also doubles as a member of the selection committee choosing this year’s recipients of the Heineken Independent Achiever Award.
Joining Burns on the committee are Cox, Universal Motown president Sylvia Rhone, music industry veteran Kedar Massenburg and Jason Orr, founder of Atlanta’s FunkJazz Kafe.
The award will be presented at each of the nine Red Star Soul concerts. Previous recipients include the late J. Dilla and Gerald Levert, Raheem DeVaughn and Chicago producer No. I.D.
