Natalie Cole is at work on her next studio album for Verve with producers Dallas Austin and David Munk, Billboard has learned. Expected in the first half of next year, the as-yet-untitled set finds Cole covering songs made famous by the likes of Fiona Apple, Shelby Lynne, Neil Young and Kate Bush.
Although Austin was initially on board to produce only a handful of songs for the album, the collaboration went so well that he joined up for the full set.
The new album will be the follow-up to 2002’s “Ask a Woman Who Knows, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums chart has sold more than 252,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
In other news, Cole will join Gavin DeGraw, Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder for performances at the fourth biennial Angel Ball, which raises money for cancer research. The event will be held Nov. 14 at the New York Marriott Marquis and will honor Patti LaBelle and Russell Simmons, among others, for the philanthropic contributions.
