Coldplay leads the European Top 100 Albums survey for a fourth week with “X&Y” (Parlophone). In the United Kingdom, its sales during four weeks at the chart peak total 907,000 units. The set goes back 2-1 in Germany and holds at the top in Holland, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria and at No. 2 in Sweden. “X&Y” also climbs 4-3 in France. The album slips 1-2 in Ireland and Flanders, 1-3 in Italy, 2-4 in Portugal, 3-4 in Spain and 3-5 in Norway.
Despite those falls, “X&Y” maintains the pan-European crown ahead of Jamiroquai’s “Dynamite” (Sony Music), which stays at No. 2. The pop-R&B act’s sixth album in a 12-year chart career has second-week falls of 2-4 in France, 3-4 in Switzerland and Italy and 3-5 in their home market, Britain. After a No. 8 U.K. hit with the album’s first single “Feels Just Like It Should” last month, “Seven Days In Sunny June” is set for Aug. 15 release there. The band’s European tour, sponsored by Sony Ericsson, visits the Nuke Festival near Vienna on Saturday (July 9), with 17 further European dates scheduled before the British leg begins Sept. 7 at Birmingham NEC.
Shakira’s “Fijacion Oral Vol.1” (Epic) is up 5-3 on Top 100 Albums, a new peak in its fourth chart week. Its highest placing is at No. 2 in both Spain and Austria. Single “La Tortura” featuring Alejandro Sanz, which drops 6-7 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, is top three in Spain, Austria and Switzerland.
Faithless’ “Forever Faithless” compilation (Cheeky/Sony BMG) returns to the composite top ten, moving 12-9. That’s thanks to a 5-3 improvement in the United Kingdom, where total seven-week sales are 377,000 units, and climbs 6-5 in Holland.
Crazy Frog’s “Axel F” (Gusto/Mach1) starts a third week atop the Eurochart, as the “frog ringtone” craze spreads swiftly through Europe. The track spends a second week at No. 1 in France and Switzerland. It’s new at No. 1 in Norway and No. 8 in Spain, and climbs 7-3 in Holland and 5-4 in Sweden. The album “Crazy Frog Presents Crazy Hits” is set for U.K. release on July 25, with a follow-up single, a version of Hot Butter’s international 1972 “Popcorn” due Aug. 8.
The top five on the Eurochart remain unchanged, with Akon’s “Lonely” (SRC/Universal) at No. 2 and “Ghetto Gospel” (Universal) by 2Pac featuring Elton John at No. 3. The Backstreet Boys’ “Incomplete” (Jive) moves back into the top ten, 12-8, after a No. 8 debut in the United Kingdom. It’s the group’s 15th top ten hit there in a span of nine years.
Former classical vocalist protegee Charlotte Church debuts at No. 9 on the Eurochart with her solo pop debut “Crazy Chick” (Sony BMG), which opens at No. 2 in the United Kingdom on sales of 32,000 units. It’s the lead release from Church’s “Tissues and Issues” album, out in the United Kingdom next Monday (July 11), on which she has co-written seven of the 12 tracks.
