Coldplay love visiting Australia, particularly when the sun is baking, the beers are cold and the Christmas vibe is all around.
Chris Martin and co. wrapped their multi-date Head Full of Dreams tour of Australasia on Wednesday (Dec. 14) with the second of two shows at Sydney’s Alliance Stadium. As a special festive thank-you, the British four-piece gave the gift no-one saw coming: an Australia-themed Christmas song.
“Coming to Australia is such a treat so it’s time we wrote a song specifically for Australia,” Martin told the audience on closing night.
Coldplay’s “Christmas With The Kangaroos” probably won’t spring into many December playlists, but its amusing rollcall of all-things-Aussie – from Mick “Crocodile” Dundee to Kylie Minogue and retired cricket star Shane Warne — was lapped up by the Sydney crowd.
“Well they say Christmas here is much more fun/We got surfing, we got sun/Christmas here is sweet as a peach/Open presents on the beach/We’ve got barbies, we’ve got beer, Santa wishes he lives here/Loads of laughter, loads of booze/Christmas with the Kangaroos,” Martin sings.
Now that’s the spirit.
