Although Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” offers some experimentation and plays off electronic music trends, the group’s latest single-which may or may not be from its forthcoming fifth album-finds the foursome on the same journey as its last album, 2008’s “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.”The song’s lyrics are as heavy-handed as its title suggests and continue Coldplay’s new inclination of universal themes, with frontman Chris Martin turning the mundane (a teardrop, a siren) into something more (a waterfall, a symphony). Vocally, Martin continues to explore his lower register, yet ends with some trademark falsetto notes. “Waterfall” incorporates dance elements into Coldplay’s signature sound, but the group stays true to its alt-rock roots by emphasizing acoustic guitars over the electronic production.
