With three trophies, Coldplay was the big winner last night at the fourth annual BT Digital Music Awards in London.
The British alternative rock act walked away with the People’s Choice award, and trophies for best digital community and best digital campaign.
Parlophone labelmates Gorillaz won the best dance artist and artist of the year honors.
Other winners included Stereophonics for best rock artist, while their Welsh compatriots Goldie Lookin’ Chain took out the category for best urban artist.
The July 2 London Live 8 Concert claimed the best event or performance category.
Apple Computer’s market-leading iTunes was named best digital music store for the second successive year.
Of the 18 awards presented on the night, 13 were decided by a public vote. Organizers BT, the telecommunications giant, said more than 500,000 votes were cast. Final winners were calculated by combining the votes of the judges and the votes of the public on a 50:50 basis.
The remaining five trophies were voted on solely by the industry panel.
BT established the awards to recognize cutting edge developments in the digital media marketplace. U.K. industry trade group BPI, the Official U.K. Charts Company, collecting society Phonographic Performance Ltd, and the Mobile Entertainment Forum lent support to the initiative.
National TV network Channel 4 will air the gala tonight and later on its sister digital channel E4.
